There are certain habits or activities that most people should be accustomed to doing on a daily basis, one of which is brushing your teeth. It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and to do so properly you want to make sure your toothbrush is clean before you put it in your mouth. The CDC, Center for Disease Control, has gone on record saying that “even after being visibly clean, toothbrushes can remain contaminated with potentially pathogenic organisms.” Since you use your toothbrush often it is important to know how to keep it clean.
Here are a few ways to help you keep your toothbrush as germ-free as possible:
- Keeping your toothbrush in a cabinet or using a toothbrush protector actually increases bacteria.
- Keeping multiple brushes in one cup is bad – brushes rub against each other and spread bacteria.
- Wash your hands first! This may seem like common sense, but many people first reach for their toothbrush.
- Wash your toothbrush before and after every use. This means holding it under running water and rubbing your thumb over it with force.
- Occasionally place your toothbrush in the dishwasher for a deep clean. Use ordinary dishwasher soap.
- Replace every three to four months.
- Always use toothpaste!
